Lil Wayne Pleads To Attempted Gun Possession

Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK (AP) — The Grammy-winning rapper Lil Wayne pleaded guilty to attempted weapon possession on Thursday, and expects to receive a one-year jail sentence.

He previously had pleaded not guilty to illegal gun possession charges that carried at least 3 1/2 years in prison upon conviction.

Lil Wayne remains free on bail while awaiting his February sentencing. The somber-looking rapper did not speak as he left court.

Police said a gun was found on his tour bus in Manhattan in 2007.

The rapper, born Dwayne Carter, won last year’s best rap solo performance Grammy for “A Milli.” His albums include “Tha Carter,” “Tha Carter II” and “Tha Carter III.”

His trial had been due to start Jan. 20. The judge had been holding a hearing on a debated DNA profiling technique used to tie the rapper to the gun.

Lil Wayne, 27, also is scheduled for trial in Arizona on felony drug possession and weapons charges. He has pleaded not guilty in that case, which arose from a January 2008 arrest at a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint.

In New York, he politely answered the judge’s standard questions with “yes, Sir” and “no, Sir” as he entered his plea to second-degree attempted weapon possession, a felony.

He acknowledged he had a .40 caliber semi-automatic loaded gun on bus.

When the judge warned that he would not be able to withdraw the plea as some people try to do, the rapper said, “I’m not one of those people.”

Prosecutors said small amounts of DNA found on the loaded weapon connected it to the platinum-selling artist. Defense lawyer Stacey Richman said the gun wasn’t Lil Wayne’s, and the testing technique was too problematic to prove otherwise.

Police pulled over Lil Wayne’s tour bus in Columbus Circle on July 22, 2007. They said they had seen and smelled marijuana smoke wafting out the door before the bus left a concert venue minutes earlier.

Police said that as an officer approached, the rapper tossed away a Louis Vuitton bag containing a gun.

The defense disputed officers’ basis for searching the bus and noted that more than a dozen other people were aboard.

50 Cent Says Fabolous And Him Are Cool [Video]

50 Cent insists that despite publicly expressing “disappointment” in Fabolous recently over Twitter comments, the two have no problems.

“Yeah, we’re cool,” 50 said recently on the set of his video for “Baby By Me.” “Fab particularly is an artist I’ve interacted with twice. He’s [opened] two international runs [for the G-Unit]. It wasn’t specifically to try and help him broaden his international presence, but it obviously it would help for him to be there and be in front of the audience internationally and put his best foot forward first. Give a good show and people become Fabolous fans at that point.”

Via his Twitter, Fab questioned 50’s motives for having former mic rivals like the Lox and the Diplomats perform at his Thisis50 Festival that took place earlier this month. In the wake of his comments, Fab insisted that he was not dissing Fif.

“He reached to tell me he didn’t mean it in that derogatory way,” 50 confirmed. “People misinterpret what you type in the text. I’ve misinterpreted what people were trying to send to me, sending me messages before as well. Before we utilize devices we use to communicate with each other intimately on Twitter and other Web sites, you can forget you’re making a public statement. You can feel you’re having barbershop talk or just saying your personal take on something, and it’s a public statement and people start to resent you for it.

“He kind of felt a little backlash on it,” 50 added about Fab. “People responded negatively to it because they were like, ‘Finally [these artists are performing together]‘ and he’s going, ‘Wasn’t I a part of dividing New York City?’ I wasn’t a part of dividing New York City. New York City wasn’t accepting me initially.”

50’s Before I Self Destruct LP arrives on November 23, but the G-Unit General said he might drop another mixtape before then.

“I have a tape I didn’t put out yet,” he said. “It’s called The 50th Law. I’ve been sitting on it. I’m gonna put it out soon. I’ve been so wrapped up in the presentation for this actual album, I hadn’t released it.”

Lil Wayne Rumored To Plead Out To A 8 Month Jail Term Today

lil-wayne1

Lil Wayne will be forced to plead out to a jail term in New York City on Thursday, according to sources with AllHipHop.com.

The rapper is expected to accept an 8-month bid in jail over his alleged involvement with a loaded .40-caliber pistol gun found on his tour bus in 2007 while in New York.

The 27-year-old now faces 15 years in jail for each count of criminal weapons possession and criminal possession of a loaded weapon.

“Wayne is going to plead guilty,” a source close to the case told AllHipHop.com, stressing that this was definitely going to happen. The rapper pleaded not guilty at press time and has yet to make any such public declaration. “The date is coming up and he’s going to do it tomorrow.”

Wayne is rumored to be willing to accept the deal to avoid a long term in jail over the gun. The same source said the term will begin in February of 2010 under the terms of the deal. “If he doesn’t plead, he goes to jail for a long time,” the source said.

“They told him that if he doesn’t plead tomorrow, it will go to trial and then he faces a far longer jail term,” the source continued.

A small amount of DNA may have changed the landscape of the case, according to a report by the Associated Press. There is a “minuscule” amount of the rapper’s DNA on the gun, reports say, and that has strengthened the case for the prosecution.

Another hearing is set to resume tomorrow, where the rapper will reportedly announce his next move.

AllHipHop.com was unable to obtain comment from representatives for Wayne at press time and the rapper didn’t speak to the media at a court date earlier today.

Lil’ Wayne has another trial looming in March over felony drug and weapons charges from a January 2008 police raid.
